Malaysia Airlines Launches First Shuttle to Ferry Malaysians Students from Jeddah to Kuala Lumpur (Updated 5.00pm, 5 Feb 2011)

Malaysia Airlines is mounting its second Boeing 747 in its rescue mission to ferry Malaysians students from Jeddah to Kuala Lumpur.

This will be the first direct shuttle to Kuala Lumpur after the national carrier for the past few days had assisted to evacuate stranded Malaysian from Cairo to Jeddah. Malaysia Airlines is using its charter flight which was retrofitted last July that can accommodate up to 454 passengers.

Rescue flight MH8028 will leave Kuala Lumpur at 11.00 am on Sunday, 6 February and is expected to arrive Jeddah at 4.00 pm (Saudi local time). The same flight is scheduled to leave Jeddah at 7.00 pm (Saudi local time) and expected to reach Kuala Lumpur the following day at 10.00 am, on Monday 7 February.

Malaysia Airlines’ Director of Operations Captain Mohamed Azharuddin Osman said, “We are working around the clock to evacuate as many Malaysians as possible. The team spirit is overwhelming and everyone is solely focused on the mission and nothing else. We are mounting twice daily flights between Cairo and Jeddah until 7 February and now a direct flight from Jeddah to Kuala Lumpur”.

As of now, Malaysia Airlines has flown out some 1400 Malaysians, comprising mostly students from Cairo to Jeddah since the evacuation mission began on Thursday.

The rescue flights are in line with Malaysia Airline’s corporate social responsibility commitment and the national carrier will continue to support National Security Council and the Malaysian Government in this mission.
